#GoodReads - Over the next 6 days, I will be sharing the titles of 12 books. This recommended reading list, includes popular and obscure authors, who's literary works are essential material, to those seeking knowledge and understanding of the Black experience, from a historical and contemporary lens. So lets start with 'South Africa's Global Propaganda War' by Ron Nixon. This book brings to light the long battle over apartheid: the global propaganda campaign waged by the South African government in an attempt to bolster support for apartheid. For forty years, the regime used secret funding, subtle co-option, overt lies, blackmail and violence to promote the idea that Apartheid was not bad. Drawing on interviews with key players and thousands of previously unavailable documents from US, British and South African archives, Nixon offers a detailed picture of a $100 million annual campaign that drew on an elaborate network of support from corporations and conservative religious organisations, revealing how the image of apartheid was managed and supported, despite fifty years of struggle and protest. Our second book 'Rabbit Proof Fence' by Doris Pilkington is the remarkable true story of three young girls who cross the harsh Australian desert on foot to return to their home. Following an Australian government edict in 1931, black aboriginal children and children of mixed marriages were gathered up by whites and taken to settlements to be assimilated. In Rabbit-Proof Fence, award-winning author Doris Pilkington traces the captivating story of her mother, Molly, one of three young girls. At the settlement, Molly and her relatives Gracie and Daisy were forbidden to speak their native language, forced to abandon their aboriginal heritage, and taught to be culturally white. After regular stays in solitary confinement, the three girls scared and homesick planned and executed a daring escape from the grim camp. The girls headed for the nearby rabbit-proof fence that stretched over 1,000 miles, their journey lasted over a month. Their story is a truly moving tale of defiance and resilience. Have you read these books, let us know your thoughts below.
